How to open a bank account for a Cyprus company

What Cyprus banks look for, the documents you need, the steps involved and how to get your account approved faster.

Once your company is registered, a bank account is usually the next thing you need: to pay in share capital, invoice clients, pay suppliers and, for some permit applications, show the money you have brought into Cyprus. Banks are careful about new corporate clients, so preparation makes all the difference.

What banks look at

Every bank runs its own know-your-customer (KYC) and anti-money-laundering checks. In practice they want clear answers to four questions:

  • Who owns and controls the company? Every shareholder, director and ultimate beneficial owner.
  • What does the company do? Its activity, clients, suppliers and the countries it works with.
  • Where does the money come from? The source of funds for the capital and the source of wealth of the owners.
  • How will the account be used? Expected turnover, number and size of payments, and currencies.

Documents you will typically need

Exact lists differ between banks, but most will ask for:

  • Company documents: certificate of incorporation, memorandum and articles of association, and certificates of directors, shareholders and registered office.
  • Identity documents for every director, shareholder and beneficial owner, usually a passport and a recent proof of address such as a utility bill.
  • A short business plan or description explaining the activity, expected turnover and main counterparties.
  • Evidence of source of funds, for example bank statements, sale contracts or dividend records.
  • Supporting contracts or invoices, if the company is already trading.
  • CVs or professional profiles of the people behind the company.

Documents issued outside Cyprus may need to be certified, apostilled or translated. Our apostille and certification service can handle this.

The process step by step

  1. Choose the right bank for your activity, currencies and the countries you deal with.
  2. Prepare the file: company documents, KYC documents and a clear business description.
  3. Submit the application and answer the bank’s follow-up questions.
  4. Meet the bank, in person or by video call, if it asks to.
  5. Sign the account documents and set up online banking and card access.
  6. Pay in the share capital and start trading.

Tips for a faster approval

  • Be specific. “Software development for clients in Germany and the UK” is better than “IT services”.
  • Keep the structure simple where you can. Every extra layer means more documents and more questions.
  • Show substance in Cyprus, such as a real office, local staff or a local director, if you have it.
  • Answer follow-up questions fully and quickly. Incomplete answers are the most common reason for delay.

No adviser can guarantee that a bank will accept a client: the decision is always the bank’s. What we can do is present a complete, clear file to the right bank, which gives you the best chance.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to open a corporate bank account in Cyprus?

It depends on the bank and on how complete your file is. A simple local company with clear ownership can be ready in a few weeks; structures with foreign shareholders, several layers or international activity usually take longer because of the extra due-diligence questions.

Do directors need to visit Cyprus to open the account?

Many banks ask to meet the directors and main shareholders in person or by video call. Requirements vary from bank to bank, so we confirm the format with the bank before you plan any travel.

Can I open the account with an electronic money institution instead of a bank?

Yes. Licensed payment and e-money institutions are an option for some businesses and are often quicker, but they do not offer every banking product, and some clients or authorities may prefer a traditional bank account.

Why do banks ask so many questions about my business?

Banks in Cyprus must follow EU anti-money-laundering rules. They need to understand who owns and controls the company, where its money comes from and how the account will be used. A clear, well-prepared file is the best way to speed this up.
